Learning the color of a chair, or an elephant, of flowers, sun, zebra, parrot etc, will not need mugging up, but mere practical activity that will leave an everlasting impression on these little developing minds. You can also engage them in activities like creating new colors by mixing 2 or 3 colors. This will make them understand the evolution of different colors, which is fun too. Children who spend time coloring and painting in their growing up years are studied to have an improved concentration, and also creative in their work. They are trained to think and be creative in their thinking, and have ability to perceive and grasp better.
Have the children color various animals in whatever way they like. If a child wants to color a monkey purple allow them to do so. Then cut up various parts of the colored images. Cut the body parts off of the animals and place them in a pile on a table. Then have the kids assemble animals out of the parts. The final product will be a remarkable and weird compilation. This exercise usually really gets the kids laughing as they create funny and weird animals.
As you add layer upon layer to create the animal fur keep in mind the roundness of the shapes and the areas of light and dark. Start with a thin, watery version of the color and darken it as you work. Be careful not to end up darkening everything. Let some of each layer show through. The final stages of the painting will show detail. Use a very small detail brush and paint in some hair or hair strands. A lot of times, just a few details of hair is all that is needed to send the viewer the message of fur. Don't forget to add whiskers, final highlights and shadows. Have fun and enjoy learning to paint animals.
