Children don't only need to recognize and sound out letters, but they also need to learn to print the letters of the alphabet. You can do this on your own by just printing a sample of a letter and have your child copy it. However, some children need a little extra help in forming the letters and really benefit from tracing over letters several times before trying to do it without a template. Luckily, there are lots of resources online where you can print these letter tracing templates. If your child starts to get frustrated, then take a break. You want them to have fun learning and be supportive of the whole journey.
Along with flash cards, magnetic letters are fun and a great teaching tool. Simple words, with good clear sounds and lots of repetition once again, will help the child avoid frustration and keep interest. Once a young child has mastered a word with rhyming ability like "cat" then they will enjoy changing the first letter to sound out blending words such as "bat," "rat," and "fat" with emphasis on how the beginning letters of B, R and F are sounded out.
One component of learning letter recognition is identifying what shape a letter takes. Does it have rounded parts, like the letter "b"? Does it have a tall step, like the letter "h"? Does it go below the lines, like the letter "p"? These are all traits which are shared by various letters of the alphabet, and can be used to make generalizations. Once these traits have been identified by students in preschool, alphabet letters to trace help reinforce the concept.
Write each letter of the week's spelling words. Get your scissors and cut each letter into its own card. Now the fun begins. Pull out the letters for one word and mix them up. Kids can then move the letters around until the spelling is correct. If you have a bell, let them ring it when they think the answer is correct. Are they too good at the game? Set a timer for each word to increase the difficulty.
