Sometimes, I like to give them a chance to slow down and engage with sports in a different form. Coloring gives my active boys a chance to calm down, slow the pace and catch their breath a bit (or just sit peacefully at a restaurant table while waiting for food). Coloring books exclusively about sports exist, and I have shared a dozen of our favorite sports coloring books, but that doesn′t always cut it. My kids come to the table with a vision, an idea of exactly what they want to color. Consequently, we′ve resorted to making our own coloring books with a little help from Google.
If you color right before bed, there is also another benefit: it means that you are not looking at your phone or computer right before bed. Studies have shown that the blue light from a computer screen or a phone screen inhibits the production of the hormone melatonin, which is the hormone that regulates sleep and lets us go to bed at night. Low levels of melatonin are associated with a variety of health problems, from insomnia to obesity. If you can replace your before‐bed phone habit with a before‐bed coloring habit, you can potentially benefit from increased levels of melatonin, better sleep, and a healthier circadian rhythm.
Orange is a bright and cheerful color that has been shown to enhance communication, and socialization. Children who play in rooms with orange color schemes tend to be more cooperative, extroverted, and confident. Of course, as with any warm color, too much orange can be overstimulating, and wind up having the opposite effect. While orange may bring out the chatty side of a shy child, too much orange may overwhelm them and cause them to feel irritable and not at all like being friendly. Orange is best used as an accent color, especially the softer shades of orange. Try pairing orange with soft shades of green, lavender, or a neutral cream color.
