Coloring is a fine motor strengthening tool that many Occupational Therapists recommend and use in treatment sessions. Coloring is a resistive task that provides the small muscles in the hand to work the waxy crayon onto coloring sheets. When a child holds a crayon, they are working on the strength of the intrinsic muscles of the hand. Using broken crayons requires more work and is a greater strengthening task for kids who need to work on their tripod grasp. For more strengthening, encourage your child to color more resistive surfaces such as construction paper, cardboard, or even sand paper.

Some studies show that children who work or learn in yellow rooms benefit from increased concentration and have better memory recall. Of course, keep in mind that if you have a child who tends to fight bedtime, or wake up early, yellow is probably going to make that problem worse. If a room gives off too much of a “daytime” vibe, an overexcited child may find it very difficult to calm down. Yellow works very well as an accent color when it is paired with gray, blue, or green. This balance allows the positive aspects of yellow to shine through, without leaving the child feeling irritated or angry – as can happen with an overabundance of yellow.

Look at the pairs of circles in the example below to see what I mean. The middle of each of the circles is the same size, shape, and color. The only thing that changes is the background color. Yet, the middle circles appear softer or brighter depending on the contrasting color behind it. You may even notice movement or depth changes just based on one color change. This is because the way in which we use two colors together changes how we perceive it. So, when you're choosing colors for your graphic designs, think about how much contrast you want throughout the design.

Although it might seem like a strange teaching method, you can actually use coloring to teach a preschooler important lessons. One of the most basic lessons you will teach them are the names of the colors themselves. When a child is coloring help them to learn their colors by identifying the name of the color in a particular pencil or marker. In front of a group or individual, have a quiz where you ask them to mark specific colors on a blank sheet of paper. You can turn this activity into a little contest by awarding the first child who colors correctly a prize. As children start to learn to write have them write the names of the colors underneath patches of color.

If kids are given an opportunity to express themselves and control a creative product you will find that they enjoy school much more. Regular creative projects will dramatically change the way elementary school kids think about learning. Because most kids love animals it is a good idea to integrate this love with their creativity. Although most kids don't know how to draw animals they can learn to color them. Described below are some of my favorite animal coloring crafts for elementary school.

If a child wants to color a monkey purple allow them to do so. Then cut up various parts of the colored images. Cut the body parts off of the animals and place them in a pile on a table. Then have the kids assemble animals out of the parts. The final product will be a remarkable and weird compilation. This exercise usually really gets the kids laughing as they create funny and weird animals.

They hate homework and would rather be playing outside. Although recess is fun, most of their time is spent doing some things that they find boring. Perhaps this is a good idea given that some kids will end up doing a job they don't like! However, shouldn't elementary school be a time when kids have some fun? Obviously you need to teach them some critical skills, but it is also important for them to enjoy themselves.

The base color is usually light and gets darker as you build the layers. Don't worry about making it look like fur or hair at this point. Next, use a dark color such as black or burnt umber to fill in the outline of the eyes, deep shadows, or other very dark areas. You will need to paint in the eyes, nose, mouth, paws, etc. If your drawing is detailed enough you should be able to do this by using a very small detail brush. Just outline everything and then fill it in with appropriate colors.
