By focusing on coloring different drawings of a coloring page, kids learn the skill of patience. They are relaxed during the entire process of coloring and focused on every line, color and shape and every other detail needed to bring their pictures to life. By being immersed in the act of coloring, not only do they develop a great eye for detail, but they also learn how to be patient. If they are patient until they finish the picture, it will become exactly what they had in mind all along. Consequently, they will feel a great sense of accomplishment.
According to color theorists, pictures help to stimulate memory and boost information recall. But this doesn′t mean printing and sticking‐up random pictures around the room; it′s the colors used within the images that help with the revision process. For example, an image of a sky will inevitably incorporate lots of blue, and the color blue is known to be calming and to boost creativity – both of which are important during revision. Or red, which is associated with adrenaline and correction, encourages both awareness and vigilance, in turn boosting memory and recall. Different pictures may be relevant at different stages of revision. Red may be more appropriate in the thick of revision, whilst your child is trying to absorb as much information as possible, whereas blue may be more beneficial in the days leading up to exams to keep stress levels low.
If you color right before bed, there is also another benefit: it means that you are not looking at your phone or computer right before bed. Studies have shown that the blue light from a computer screen or a phone screen inhibits the production of the hormone melatonin, which is the hormone that regulates sleep and lets us go to bed at night. Low levels of melatonin are associated with a variety of health problems, from insomnia to obesity. If you can replace your before‐bed phone habit with a before‐bed coloring habit, you can potentially benefit from increased levels of melatonin, better sleep, and a healthier circadian rhythm.
