Trouble with Comics, Al Williamson Remembered

Al Williamson Remembered

Over at The Comics Reporter, Tom Spurgeon remembers legendary EC artist Al Williamson (updated obit with additional art).

Williamson was one of a few comics artists (along with Gil Kane and Steve Ditko) whose style really stood out for me as a very young comics reader; my eyes saw his work as being so far superior to most everything else being published that I very quickly learned his name and kept an eye out for anything he did. As a teenager I had the great good luck to be given Russ Cochran’s EC Library hardcovers as a gift, and Williamson’s greatest works were revealed unto me, along with his peers at EC like Wallace Wood and Bernie Krigstein.

With Williamson’s passing, the great era of comics illustration is drawn even more to a close, but thankfully much of his work remains in print or accessible in one way or another. I can’t recommend strongly enough that you seek out some of his work, if you want to know just how beautiful comics art can be.
