Guest Reviewer Month - Brett Warnock on Papercutter #1

I recall a few years back stumbling across a small anthology titled Papercutter with an incredibly cool cover by Aaron Renier, at seminal zine store Reading Frenzy. Where the hell did this tight, small-formatted anthology-that-could come from? And who edited it? Long a junkie of the anthology format [having cut my teeth as a reader on the likes of Rubber Blanket, Buzzard, Zoomcranks, Snake Eyes, Raw, D&Q, Nozone, et al], i simply had to know!!
A few questions with whomever happend to be working the counter revealed the editor and publisher to be none other than Greg Means of Tugboat Press, right here in Portland, OR. Greg is know also known for his comic Clutch (As Clutch McBastard.)
Papercutter is in this grizzled vet’s eyes, the best indy anthology on the stands today. I think what i like best about Greg’s aesthetic, is that the artists and stories he curates within the comic resonate with depth and warmth. There is (usually) a solid human core and emotional truth which permeates most of the work.
Now, I consider myself a pretty up-to-speed pro, but Papercutter has graciously introduced me to a plethora of fine new creators i never would have known of otherwise. Many surprises, and nearly to a person these newbies have positively sparkled.
I’ve devoured every issue to date, and always look forward to the next one. A short-list of standouts include the aformentioned Aaron Renier, JP Coovert, Colleen Coover, Liz Prince, Carrie McNinch, Graham Annable, Sarah Oleksyk, John (King Cat) Porcellino, Kaz Strzepek, Bwana Spoons, Alec Longstreth, Laura Park, Jonathan Hill, Jeremy Tinder, Hellen Jo, Jesse Reklaw, Dustin Harbin, and Nate Powell.
It must also be pointed out that every issue (12 and counting) features lusciously drawn and wonderfully designed inside covers—which also function as indicia and contents pages—by Nate Beaty.
Great stuff.
Do yourself a favor and check out this terrific comic book anthology.
